Healthy People Illawarra promotes physical activity for all age groups through working for active transport, active play and child friendly urban design.
Physical activity in everyday life has substantial positive impacts on people’s health and well being. People who are physically active are less likely to develop lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, the negative effects of obesity, and are less likely to suffer from mental illness.
Not only do people benefit from being more active, but there are also environmental, economic and social benefits. An active community uses cars less often, has less congested roads, cleaner air, and is more likely to be a stronger community with greater connectedness and participation.
Horsley's Outdoor Krew (HOK)program
Healthy People Illawarra, in conjunction with its community partners and with funding from Dapto Leagues Club, runs a fun and interactive community program specially designed for 9-12 year olds in the West Dapto area.
West Dapto is growing rapidly and our local research has shown a lack of activities for children aged 9-12 years. Horsley's Outdoor Krew has been developed specifically for this age group and provides them with somewhere to have fun,be active and develop new skills in the outdoor setting of Gerringulli Park,Horsley.
An evaluation on the program was completed in March 2015 - available here.
